  1. I am uploading a file, CATLIBR.ZIP.  It contains a seemingly
  2. complete list of public research libraries and databases which
  3. may be accessed on line.  It is a large file because it contains
  4. a lot of description of the libraries and how to use their
  5. software.  (Most of the mainframe software is very different from
  6. the sort of stuff we are used to.)
  7.  
  8. I have added to the packet a message that appeared on the
  9. "Friends Forum" BBS of the Montgomery County Public Library
  10. (301-217-3913).  This BBS contains several bulletins which tell
  11. how to operate the Montgomery County Public Access Catalog (PAC)
  12. (301-217-3906), which was featured in the September, 1990, issue
  13. of the CapPCUG "Monitor."

  15. The message gives instructions for accessing TELNET to use the
  16. University of Maryland Library.  Presumably (I have not tested
  17. this) the other libraries that can be accessed via TELNET should
  18. be accessed in a similar manner, as described in the CATTXT?.TXT
  19. files in CATLIBR.ZIP.

  21. Users who download the file will need PKZIP110.EXE to restore it
  22. from its compressed state.  Apple Macintosh users will need the
  23. program UNZIP110.CPT, which is available on some BBSs (and
  24. America Online), and which I have suggested that the Sysop mount
  25. on this one.

  27. According to the April, 1991 issue of "Online Connection," the
  28. publication of the Telecommunications Group of the Boston
  29. Computer Society, Adam Gaffin maintains a list of publicly
  30. accessible library catalogs on the "FRED BBS" 508-872-8461.  Adam
  31. Gaffin wrote an article on online access to libraries in the
  32. August, 1990 issue of "Online Connection."

  34. The April "Online Connection" also has a review of a book, "Dial
  35. In 1990-91: An Annual Guide to Library Online Public Access
  36. Catalogs in North America,"  Michael Schuyler, ed., Meckler
  37. Publishing, Westport, Conn.  While the review is generally
  38. favorably, particularly with respect to the treatment of
  39. telecommunications basics for novices, it is no more than "a good
  40. place to start," because the listing is far from exhaustive.  The
  41. review is by Adam Heath, Deputy Director of the BCS
  42. Telecommunications Group.
